-Discussed Whale Rider-
  "Eight-year-old Kahu, a member of the Maori tribe of Whangara, New Zealand, fights to prove her love, her leadership, and her destiny. Her people claim descent from Kahutia Te Rangi, the legendary “whale rider.” In every generation since Kahutia, a male heir has inherited the title of chief. But now there is no male heir, and the aging chief is desperate to find a successor. Kahu is his only great-grandchild – and Maori tradition has no use for a girl. But when hundreds of whales beach themselves and threaten the future of the Maori tribe, it is Kahu who saves the tribe when she reveals that she has the whale rider’s ancient gift of communicating with whales."

-Southland book chat
Summary: the book is about a Japanese student who's family is very secretive and in order to discover the truth about her cousins murder she must tap into her families past.

Comments: Spoiler alert* the grandfather was introduced as a sweet old man but then it is revealed that he is has actually been in the Japanese concentration camp and has a break down women when he confronts a women after he was racist to his eight year old grand daughter.

Most important event: the boys deaths were an initial mystery that all the readers want to discover through reading the book

Comments: every chapter is important in the book, they might seem as if they don't have any significance but the book does a good job of tying them into the main mystery of the book

Would you recommend the book?
Yes, because its a good historical book, it gives a person a lot to think about, and it would be good for other students around our age. 

Is it a laborious read?
It was decided by the members that about the first 10 chapters are a challenge to read but at the same time it you get "pulled" into it.

Reviewing our book cover contest we determined the winners. 
They will be announced on our blog page on the 31st.
Congrats to the winners!
The winners will receive their prizes at our next club meeting on and we hope to find out what their inspirations for these designs were!

Our Career center visit is on November 18th.
We will meet at the front desk of the L building at 4:15pm. Visit will start at 4:30pm.
People should come with questions. You can set up an appointment while you are there!

Southland Cover Design Contest

The Shatford Library Student Association is hosting a book cover design contest for the book Southland by Nina Revoyr! We thought this contest would be a good tie in to our discussion of the book for this month's meeting.

Rules:
1. Only a design of the front cover, please.
2. Size- 8.5" x 11"
3. Must be in PDF or JPEG form.
4. No vulgarity! This is a public, school event so keep it classy. Thank you.
4. Must be your own original design.
5. Must include title, Southland, and author, Nina Revoyr.
6. Open to PCC students and faculty.
7. ONE design per participant.
8. Submit your cover design to ICC.PCCSLSA@gmail.com.
9. Label the email "Southland Cover Design Contest" and have your full name, ID number, and phone number in the email along with the attached design.

Deadline: Midnight October 25, 2013. No late submissions.

Winners will be notified October 31st. Prizes will be presented at the SLSA meeting on November 25th.

Introductions for Fall 2013

Hello! We are to announce that the Shatford Library Student Association is in full run for Fall 2013! Again, here is a little run-down of our club:


The purpose of the club shall be to foster interest in libraries, information science, and information technologies as viable career choices. Working as a liaison between the Shatford Library and the students at Pasadena City College, the club hopes to raise awareness of Shatford library services and promote the role of libraries in society. Members will be encouraged to take part in various activities such as networking with professionals, professional workshops, visits to various libraries, and guest speakers.

So, basically, it is a club to promote our college's library and to have fun by taking part in library and school related events.

Introductions! (For those of you who are new and haven't seen us before.)

Club Expectations:  I want to build a strong social network among librarians, aspiring librarians, and library enthusiasts. I want to share the joys and journeys every library has to offer with the world, or at least with the students and staff of PCC (baby steps).

Club Expectations: I want everyone to have fun.  I want to have people gain knowledge about libraries that they didn't have before; I also want people involved in the library programs to gather information about new exciting things, volunteer opportunities, and also feel confident in themselves after going through some of the workshops that we will be offering. I look forward to this opportunity to get to know everyone.

Hobbies: reading, exploring new places, going to movies, being with friends and family, taking long walks by myself, and exploring
